Why you should remove batteries from your PAT Tester

It might seem like a bit of a faff, but it makes sense to remove the batteries from your PAT Tester. The damage a leaking battery can do can render your PAT Tester irreparable.  Take a look at some of the pictures below:

These are just a few examples of what we have seen here at the Parker Bell Workshop. Basically a leaking battery doesn’t just mean that the battery no longer works or can be used. The leakage is toxic and will damage anything it touches. (Finger included!) The problem comes when the residue from the battery leaks through to the printed circuit board inside the machine.

When the residue of a leaking battery hits the printed circuit board, the board will begin to perish, resulting in potentially incorrect readings or more likely; complete failure of the machine.

What’s really frustrating about leaking batteries is that they don’t need to be old, we have seen reasonably new batteries leak as well as old ones that have been in the machine for ages. So our advice is to ALWAYS remove batteries after use. That way, if they leak they won’t cause as much damage. The pictures below illustrate how little damage is needed before a PAT Tester fails.
