PAT Testing tree lights

As the holiday decorations go up, whether you are setting the holiday scene at home or at work, you need to ensure that you take a few simple steps to reduce the risk of accidents or fires.

Before you start:

• Check the lights thoroughly and ensure the leads are intact with no damage.
• Examine the plug for signs of damage and that it’s fitted with the correct fuse.
• Read the manufacturers instructions to ensure that you use them as designed.
• Make sure the lights are always turned off at the plug when you go out or go to bed.
• Switch the lights off if they show signs of overheating

You are not required to PAT Test the lights before using them; but we suggest you include them as part of your risk assessment. That way you can schedule PAT Tests accordingly. Be sure to check what Class the appliance is. In our experience tree lights are usually Class II and you can see this from the Class II symbol on the label.

PAT Testing Tree Lights

To carry out a Class II PAT Test, simply plug the lights into the PB500 (PAT Tester) and press Class II. The testing sequence will commence. There are no tolerances on lights so a Pass is a Pass and a Fail is a Fail!

If you have lights that are Class I, you will need to identify the earth in order to complete the test sequence. You can hold the earth test lead probe to any exposed metal part on the lights, and then test Class I on the PB500 (PAT Tester). The test sequence will commence.

Once you have completed the test, complete the PASS label and adhere this to the lights. Also keep a record of the test in your records binder/log.

Extension Leads

It’s not uncommon to need to use an extension lead when using decorative lights. Especially if its only for the holiday period. Reduce the risk of accidents by checking the following:

• Ensure the extension lead has been suitably visually inspected and if necessary PAT Tested before use.
• Keep all leads and cables out of the way to ensure people cannot trip and injure themselves.
• Many sure leads are not overloaded. Checkout our blog on this: Extension Lead Overload !
• Make sure extension leads are switched off at the power supply when not in use, are unattended and at night.
• Extension leads are not a permanent solution. If you want your lights up year round; get an electrician to install a socket closer to where you need it.
