Before starting the PAT Test using the PB500; you need to do a full visual inspection. The visual inspection entails inspecting the appliances condition, as well as the plug and leads. Extension leads should only be used as a temporary solution to get electricity to an appliance that cannot be used at a nearby power outlet. One end of the extension lead plugs into a power socket and the other end more power outlets, enabling you to plug in your appliance. Extension leads are classified as appliances in their own right and should be Class I; an earthed appliance. For safety, extension leads should not be used as a long term solution. This is because they are a trip hazard and because appliances are designed to be plugged into the mains, not extension leads. Always check how whether you need to full uncoil an extension lead before using it.
The supplied designated IEC lead is used as an adapter to test an extension lead.
An Extension Lead is an appliance in its own right so needs a full visual inspection before starting the PAT Test using the PB500.
After the extension lead has passed its visual inspection, turn on the PB500.
Insert the socket of the supplied IEC lead into the IEC plug located on the top of the PAT Tester. Insert the plug of the IEC lead into the first or only socket of the extension lead and insert the plug of the extension lead into the socket of the PB500.
Press the Cord button and the PB500 will automatically perform the earth continuity (Rpe) test, the insulation (Riso) test and the polarity test.
Repeat the test for all remaining sockets on the extension lead from left to right. Every socket must be checked and if one socket fails, the whole extension lead must be failed and removed from use.
Place a “Pass” label on the extension lead, and complete the relevant Portable Appliance Test Report sheet noting the screen readings for all sockets .
Remember, If one or more sockets fail the portable appliance test the appliance must be failed.
