Many people use coiled extension leads; as they keep very long leads tidied away. It’s important to understand the maximum loads before you put the appliance to use.
You extension lead should have a label similar to this on the front or back….
This label contains VERY important information:
If you look closely, you will see guidance on how many watts can be used depending on if the lead is used coiled or uncoiled.
The above picture shows that if you leave the lead coiled you can only use appliances to the combined power of 720 watts. If you uncoil this goes up to 3120 watts. A huge difference. The extension lead will get too hot if wound up and used with appliances using more than 720 watts of power. If the heat increases, the cables will start to melt and a fire can start.
Even if you are using the correct wattage, always keep a close eye on the lead in case it starts to overheat, as it is difficult to see when it is coiled. These types of extension leads, whilst ideal for tidiness and transportation; are best used uncoiled wherever possible.
The recommendation is that you get a socket installed closer to where you need it, rather than using an extension lead. Having leads trailing around the office / warehouse / home is a trip hazard, so is best avoided altogether if possible.
