PAT Test A Class I Appliance

1 August 2019

Before starting PAT Testing, you need to carry out a full visual inspection of the appliance. This involves checking that the appliance is not damaged in any way and that the plug cables and casing are all in good condition. You can see how to do a full visual inspection here:

How to PAT test the Class I appliance

Once the appliance has passed its visual inspection, turn on the PB500. Insert the round jack of the earth test lead into the top of the PB500 and using either the probe or the crocodile clip, connect it to an external earth point on the appliance.

This will be a metal part.

Insert the plug of the appliance into the socket on the front of the PB500.

Make sure the appliance power switch is in the on position if it has one.

Press the Class I button and the PB500 will automatically perform the earth continuity (Rpe pronounced as initials) test, and the insulation (Riso pronounced as rice o) test, and the leakage (Ileak I Leak) test.

Lo Load is displayed when the appliance power on/off switch is in the Off position, or the appliance does not have a switch.
