Buyer Beware: Secondhand PAT Testers

If you are thinking of buying a second-hand PAT Tester. It may be an excellent decision; especially if you know who you are buying from. Wherever you buy from though, make sure you do your research

The PB500 has been in circulation for over 20 years. The functionality has increased over the years meaning they aren’t all the same. So, depending on what you plan to use the PAT Tester for, you may need a machine with more functionality, like the ones shown on our website. Rather than an old piece of kit.

What to do before buying:

Find out the Serial Number of the PAT Tester. This will be on a label on the back, or inside the battery compartment.

Once you have this, give us a call, and we can tell you how old the machine is and exactly what functionality it has.

We would not be able to confirm whether a machine was working correctly, but we can tell you what to do to check whether it appears to be working correctly.

Cost of Repairs.

The cost of repairing a PAT Tester at the manufacturer (for example if the is an internal component failure that we cannot fix in-house) now costs upwards of £180 +VAT. So, it really is buyer beware. As if the machine you buy has a fault, you could wind up paying more than it would cost to buy a new machine

We have recently seen several machines for sale on sites such as Ebay and Gumtree, so please be cautious. Our machines have a fantastic reputation for reliability, but it is always best to check.
